Mayengo is one of 18 collines, or areas, of Burundi in which PWRDF partner Village Health Works operates. Recently, a camp for Internally Displaced People was established there. Community Health Workers held a nutrition awareness campaign and screened 237 children between six months and 10 years.

Nyandwi, 5, was one of 19 children diagnosed with acute malnutrition (his was the only case deemed to be severe, the other 18 were moderate). In his family of eight children, Nyandwi is the seventh. His mother explains quietly, “I have no other choice because we are many in our family and we do not eat enough, we are poor so our food is mostly cassava paste and beans.”

Community Health Workers at VHW measured mid-upper arm circumference and weight-to-height ratios to diagnose malnutrition, then provided treatment, food supplementation and advice to parents. At VHW, nutrition promoters educate the community about the benefits of having a balanced diet. Model Farmers ensure the community garden produces a good variety of fruits and vegetables. The high turnout at the nutrition screening event is an indication that people in Mayengo want to learn how to prevent malnutrition.
